In 2004, the United States Mint celebrated the Great Lakes State with a special twenty-five cent release from the Philadelphia Mint. This brilliant uncirculated coin features a dual-metal composition, consisting of an outer copper-nickel blend bonded securely to a core of pure copper. On the obverse, viewers will find the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan and later prepared for modern production by William Cousins. The inscriptions surrounding the first president include the words of national faith and freedom, alongside the denomination of a quarter dollar. Turning the coin over reveals a reverse design sculpted by Donna Weaver. It features a detailed outline of the state of Michigan cradled by the expansive Great Lakes system.
