In 2004, the Philadelphia Mint produced a special silver dollar to mark the 125th anniversary of Thomas Edison's successful demonstration of the electric light bulb in 1879. The obverse side, designed by Donna Weaver, features a detailed portrait of the famed inventor holding an experimental light bulb. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin displays a rendering of Edison's very first successful light bulb.
