Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 2004-S silver quarter represents a beautiful marriage of American history and regional art. The coin is minted in 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Kept in a pristine proof finish, its reflective surfaces highlight the intricate details of a classic midwestern scene. The front of the coin displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president are the traditional inscriptions of liberty and trust, alongside the "S" mint mark, which designates its origin from the San Francisco facility. On the reverse, designer John Mercanti brings a classic American theme to life. Inspired by the style of regionalist painter Grant Wood, the design features a one-room schoolhouse where a teacher and student stand beside a mature tree. Titled "Foundation in Education," this side bears the state name "IOWA," the statehood year of 1846, and the year of coinage, 2004, alongside the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
