In 2005, the United States Mint continued its popular commemorative series with a tribute to Minnesota. This particular quarter, struck at the Denver Mint, features a Brilliant Uncirculated finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-sided design. The coin is composed of a copper and nickel blend bonded to a core of pure copper, a standard composition for modern circulating coinage. The obverse side displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president's portrait are the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR, along with the D mint mark representing the Denver facility. On the reverse, designed by Charles L. Vickers, the coin celebrates Minnesota's natural heritage. The design features a textured map outline of the state, framing a serene wilderness scene. Two people fish in a boat on a tree-lined lake, while a loon, the state bird, floats in the foreground. This side is inscribed with MINNESOTA, LAND OF 10,000 LAKES, the year of issue 2005, and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
