In 2005, the United States Mint celebrated the state of West Virginia with a special quarter design struck at the Denver facility. This particular coin, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, is composed of a copper and nickel blend bonded to a core of pure copper. The coin serves as a miniature canvas capturing both a historic president and a monumental feat of modern engineering. The front of the quarter features a classic profile of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions of liberty and the national motto, along with the distinct D mint mark indicating its origin in Denver. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin highlights the rugged beauty of the Mountain State. It depicts the scenic New River flowing through the deep New River Gorge, spanned by the immense New River Gorge Bridge. This side is inscribed with the state name, its year of statehood (1863), the year of release (2005), and the traditional phrase signifying unity out of many.
