In 2005, the United States Mint celebrated the state of California with a remarkable quarter design that honors both its natural wonders and its pioneering conservationists. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this copper and nickel clad coin features a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-sided artistry. The reverse of the coin presents a striking scene of naturalist John Muir as he looks out across the iconic granite cliffs of Yosemite Valley. Soaring high above the valley floor is a California condor, a massive bird that symbolizes the region's unique wildlife heritage. This side, created by Alfred Maletsky, also features the state name, the year 2005, and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". On the obverse, the classic profile of George Washington is displayed, a design originally fashioned by John Flanagan. Alongside the first president's portrait are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". A small "P" mint mark identifies this piece as a product of the Philadelphia minting facility.
