In 2005, the United States Mint continued its celebrated State Quarter series with a tribute to West Virginia. This particular coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and carrying the P mint mark, is preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, offering a crisp look at a design that celebrates both natural beauty and human engineering. The obverse features the classic profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, along with the face value of QUARTER DOLLAR. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin showcases a scenic view of the New River Gorge and its massive steel arch bridge. The design captures the rugged beauty of the canyon alongside the impressive structure spanning the river. This side is inscribed with the state name, WEST VIRGINIA, the year of its statehood, 1863, the name of the landmark, NEW RIVER GORGE, the year of issue, 2005, and the national motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. This copper-nickel clad coin features a core of pure copper, bonded to an outer layer of copper and nickel.
