In 2005, the United States Mint celebrated California with a special quarter design struck in 90 percent silver. This particular coin, minted in San Francisco, showcases a mirror-like proof finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-sided design. Containing 0.17875 troy ounces of pure silver, the coin is a heavy, precious-metal rendition of a circulating classic. The front of the quarter presents the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president are the traditional inscriptions of liberty and national trust, along with the denomination and the 'S' mint mark signifying its San Francisco origin. On the reverse, the coin transports viewers to the Sierra Nevada mountains. Naturalist John Muir is depicted looking out across the granite cliffs of Yosemite Valley, while a giant California condor glides overhead.
