In 2005, the United States Mint celebrated the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest with a special silver quarter dedicated to Oregon. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Crafted as a proof, the coin features highly polished fields and frosted details that bring its intricate design to life. The front of the quarter displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president's profile are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The small "S" mint mark is also visible, indicating its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, the coin transports us to the rim of Crater Lake, looking out from the south-southwest. The detailed engraving captures the majestic expanse of the lake, featuring Wizard Island alongside Watchman and Hillman Peaks. This scenic landscape is framed by the state name "OREGON," the year of its statehood "1859," the inscription "CRATER LAKE," the year of issue "2005," and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
