These notes were colloquially known as shinplasters, a term with roots in American military history, where soldiers reportedly utilized paper notes as boot liners. Canada originally introduced temporary fractional paper notes in 1870 while waiting for a shipment of new 25-cent silver coins. Over the years, three distinct versions of these 25-cent notes featured different representations of Britannia. On the obverse, the coin displays a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
