The 2006 Denver Mint issue of the North Dakota state quarter captures the wild, untamed spirit of the American West. Struck in a brilliant uncirculated finish, this twenty-five cent piece is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded securely to a core of pure copper. The coin serves as a miniature canvas showcasing the distinct geography of the Great Plains. On the reverse side, the design depicts a pair of American bison grazing amidst the sharp, weathered contours of rugged buttes and deep canyons. The scene is set against a stylized sunset, evoking the vast open spaces of the state. Inscriptions on this side include the state name, the year of its admission to the Union (1889), the year of coinage (2006), and the traditional national motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse features the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington. Surrounding the first president's portrait are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR. The small letter D is also present, indicating that this coin was produced at the Denver Mint facility.
