In 2006, the United States Mint released a special silver dollar to mark three centuries since the birth of Benjamin Franklin. This particular issue represents the second commemorative release dedicated to the legendary American statesman, diplomat, and scientist. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin contains 0.7734 ounces of pure silver within its overall composition. The front of the coin displays a portrait of an elderly Benjamin Franklin, a detailed engraving created by artist Don Everhart II. Surrounding the likeness are inscriptions marking his birth year of 1706 alongside the 2006 commemorative year, the word LIBERTY, and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST. The Philadelphia mintmark is also visible on this side. For the reverse, artist Donna Weaver recreated the historic front of the 1776 Continental Dollar. This design within a design pays homage to early American currency history. The surrounding inscriptions designate the issuing nation as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and denote the face value of ONE DOLLAR, alongside the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This issue had a total mintage of 58,000 pieces, offering a fascinating look at how modern minting technology can pay tribute to the very origins of American coinage.
