Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 2006, this silver quarter dollar represents a beautiful marriage of precious metal and regional artistry. Composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of pure metal, the coin is finished to proof standards, giving its design elements a sharp, reflective quality that highlights every detail of the engraving. The front of the coin displays the familiar profile of George Washington, a classic portrait accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The San Francisco mint mark, a small S, is positioned on this side as well. On the reverse, the design celebrates the natural and sculptural landmarks of South Dakota. A Chinese ring-necked pheasant is depicted in mid-flight, soaring across the sky in front of the massive stone faces of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The state name, SOUTH DAKOTA, and the year of its statehood, 1889, are inscribed at the top, while the year of issue, 2006, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appear at the bottom.
