In 1967, a new era of coinage began with the introduction of the Krugerrand, which holds the distinction of being the first modern gold bullion coin ever minted. Unlike traditional currency, these pieces were never assigned a specific face value. Instead, their worth is directly tied to the fluctuating market price of their precious metal content. This 2006 specimen contains 1/10 ounce of gold and is struck to a brilliant proof finish. Produced at the South African Mint in Pretoria on behalf of the South African Reserve Bank, the coin features designs that celebrate the nation's heritage. The front side displays a portrait of Paul Kruger, flanked by the name of the issuing nation written in both Afrikaans and English. The reverse side features a springbok antelope, a beloved national symbol, alongside the 2006 year of issue and the metal weight inscriptions.
