Introduced originally in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand holds a pioneering place in numismatic history as the very first modern gold bullion coin. Unlike traditional coinage, these pieces were created to have their value directly tied to the fluctuating market price of gold. This specific 2006 specimen is a proof issue, manufactured by the South African Mint, which operates as a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank. With a limited mintage of just 2,000 pieces, this quarter-ounce gold coin is fully backed as a sovereign issue by the government of South Africa. The obverse of the coin showcases the profile of Paul Kruger. Surrounding his likeness are bilingual inscriptions naming the issuing nation in both Afrikaans and English, reading as SOUTH AFRICA. On the reverse, a springbok antelope is depicted in mid-stride across the African terrain. This side of the coin also displays the 2006 year of minting, split on either side of the central image, alongside details of its fine gold content. The inscriptions include FYNGOUD and FINE GOLD, denoting its composition of a quarter ounce of pure gold.
