2006 South Africa 1 oz Proof Gold Krugerrand

1.0000 troy oz .9167 2006 Proof

Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand holds a special place in numismatic history as the very first modern gold bullion coin. It was originally created to promote the nation's rich gold resources. Unlike most legal tender, the Krugerrand was designed without a fixed face value, meaning its worth is tied directly to the fluctuating market price of its gold content. This particular 2006 release is a proof issue, representing a highly detailed strike with a limited mintage of just 2,000 pieces. The obverse of the coin displays the profile of Paul Kruger. Surrounding his portrait are inscriptions of the country's name, rendered in both Afrikaans and English as "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". On the reverse, a springbok antelope is depicted in mid-stride across the African terrain. This side of the coin also displays the 2006 year of minting, split on either side of the central image, along with the weight markings of "1 OZ FINE GOLD" and "FYNGOUD" to denote its composition of one troy ounce of gold.
