In 2006, the United States introduced a stunning modern tribute to one of its most celebrated historic coin designs. Struck at the West Point Mint, this fifty-dollar coin contains one troy ounce of exceptionally pure 0.9999 fine gold. It features a brilliant proof finish, which provides a sharp contrast between the frosted details of the design and the mirror-like background fields. The obverse presents a powerful portrait of a Native American, facing right, with the word LIBERTY and the year 2006 inscribed on the right side. The letter W, indicating its origin at the West Point Mint, is also visible. This artwork, along with the reverse depiction of a massive American buffalo standing on a mound, is adapted from the famous 1913 Buffalo Nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. On the reverse, the buffalo is surrounded by traditional inscriptions, including the country of origin, the national mottoes IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value of 50 dollars.
