2006-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo PF-70 NGC (First Year of Issue)
In 2006, the United States Mint introduced a new standard of purity with its first twenty-four karat gold coin. Struck at the West Point Mint, this inaugural release contains one troy ounce of 0.9999 fine gold. As a proof strike, it showcases a highly polished finish that brings out the intricate details of its historic artwork, serving as an official sovereign issue backed by the United States government. The design of this modern classic is adapted directly from the famous 1913 Buffalo Nickel. The obverse displays a powerful profile portrait of a Native American, accompanied by the inscription LIBERTY and the year 2006. The West Point mintmark, represented by a W, is also visible on this side. On the reverse, a magnificent American bison stands in profile, a depiction widely believed to be modeled after a famous buffalo named Black Diamond. This side features the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The lower portion of the design clearly displays the weight, purity, and face value, inscribed as 1 OZ. 0.9999 FINE GOLD and $50.
