In 2007, the United States launched a new numismatic initiative designed to celebrate its former chief executives. As the third president of the nation, Thomas Jefferson is honored on this circulating dollar coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin is presented in brilliant uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its modern design just as it looked when it first emerged from the coining press. The obverse features a detailed portrait of Thomas Jefferson, noting his status as the third president and his years in office from 1801 to 1809. On the reverse, a dramatic rendering of the Statue of Liberty stands alongside the denomination of one dollar. Unlike many traditional coins, this series utilizes a lettered edge, moving key inscriptions to the outer rim to allow the central designs to occupy more space on the coin's 26.5 millimeter surface. Though golden in appearance, the coin is composed primarily of copper, making up 88.5 percent of its alloy. The remaining composition includes 6 percent zinc, 3.5 percent manganese, and 2 percent nickel.
