The coin was minted as part of a strictly limited release, with a maximum mintage of only 3,000 pieces worldwide. The design pays tribute to the International Polar Year by highlighting two of Ireland's most famous Antarctic adventurers, Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean. On one side, the coin depicts these two legendary explorers alongside an expedition vessel, accompanied by the 100 Euro denomination. The opposite side features the traditional Irish Celtic harp nestled within a wreath, paired with the year 2008, the name of the nation, and the emblem of the International Polar Year.
