This 2008 clad half dollar, struck with a brilliant proof finish at the San Francisco Mint, celebrates a major environmental triumph. The coin marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as well as the successful population recovery of the bald eagle. Originally classified as endangered in 1967, these majestic birds made a remarkable comeback, leading to their official removal from the endangered species list in 2003. The obverse of the coin displays a tender wildlife scene, depicting a bald eagle nest containing a single unhatched egg alongside two young eaglets. This imagery represents the delicate beginnings of life and the renewal of the species. On the reverse, the famous bald eagle named Challenger is depicted in a striking pose alongside the American flag.
