The coin is defined by its proof finish, which gives the flat fields a reflective, mirror-like quality that contrasts sharply with the frosted details of the design. This modern release carries a face value of five dollars and is backed for weight and purity by the United States government. The front of the coin displays a classic representation of Lady Liberty, which was adapted from the famous early twentieth-century gold double eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In this rendition, Liberty strides forward holding a lighted torch and an olive branch. The year 2008 and the West Point 'W' mint mark are clearly visible on this side. On the reverse, a detailed family scene created by Miley Busiek depicts a male eagle in flight, carrying an olive branch to a nest that holds a female eagle and her young. The inscriptions on this side include the phrases 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', and 'IN GOD WE TRUST', alongside the weight and denomination.
