The 2008-W twenty-five dollar gold piece represents a distinctive chapter in the American Eagle series, which first began in 1986. Minted at the West Point facility in New York, this half-ounce coin is composed of 0.9167 fine gold. What sets this particular issue apart is its production process. Rather than using standard planchets, the mint struck these pieces on specially prepared, burnished blanks. This treatment imparts a unique appearance that stands out from the standard business strikes. The obverse features a classic depiction of Lady Liberty moving forward against a backdrop of radiating sunbeams. This design is an adaptation of the celebrated Gold Double Eagle created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Legible inscriptions on this face include the year 2008 and the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST". On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a family of national birds. A male bald eagle is depicted in mid-flight, bearing an olive branch back to a nest containing a female eagle and their young. The reverse inscriptions confirm the country of origin as the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", alongside the traditional mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the coin's specifications, which read "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD-25 DOLLARS". This specific specimen has been certified in the highest possible grade of Specimen 70.
