In 2008, the United States Mint released a fractional quarter-ounce version of its famous American Buffalo series. Struck in exceptionally pure 0.9999 fine gold at the West Point Mint, this ten-dollar denomination coin represents a modern continuation of one of America's most beloved numismatic designs. The series originally debuted in 2006, but this particular year offered collectors the rare opportunity to appreciate the artwork in smaller, highly detailed dimensions. The obverse of the coin features a powerful, right-facing portrait of a Native American man, an image originally created by sculptor James Earle Fraser for the 1913 five-cent piece. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the upper right rim, with the year "2008" and the "W" mint mark positioned on the lower left. Fraser's initial "F" is also visible, honoring the legacy of the original design. On the reverse, a majestic American bison stands in profile, modeled after Black Diamond, a famous resident of the Central Park Zoo in the early twentieth century. The animal is surrounded by traditional national mottos, including "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST". The inscriptions also detail the coin's weight and purity, reading "1/4 OZ. 0.9999 FINE GOLD", alongside the face value of "$10". With a limited mintage of just 9,949 pieces, this brilliant uncirculated release remains a fascinating study in American artistry and metal refinement.
