Struck in 2008, this five-dollar gold coin serves as a tribute to one of the most successful conservation efforts in American history. It honors the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, specifically marking the triumphant moment when the bald eagle was officially removed from the endangered species list. This majestic bird has held a central place in the national identity since 1782, when it was designated as the National Emblem of the United States. The obverse of the coin captures a quiet moment in nature, depicting a pair of bald eagles perched upon a tree branch. One bird is shown with its wings fully spread, while the other rests with its wings folded. Legible inscriptions on this face include the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the year 2008. On the reverse, the coin displays a classic representation of the Great Seal of the United States, which was modeled after engraved illustrations dating back to 1903.
