The 2009 American Silver Eagle represents the twenty-third year of the United States Mint's premier silver bullion initiative, which originally commenced in 1986 and ran through 2021. Struck from one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, this coin carries a face value of one dollar, backed and guaranteed by the United States government. The obverse displays a classic design initially created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. It depicts Lady Liberty wrapped in the folds of the American flag, moving gracefully toward a rising sun that emerges over a mountain ridge. This side of the coin features the legible inscriptions of the year 2009 and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, artist John Mercanti designed a powerful heraldic eagle positioned behind a central shield. The eagle holds a symbolic banner in its beak inscribed with E PLURIBUS UNUM, while its talons grasp an olive branch in the right and arrows in the left. Hovering above the eagle are thirteen small stars arranged to represent the original colonies.
