In 2009, the United States Mint brought a historic numismatic dream into the modern era. This extraordinary twenty-dollar coin is a modernized recreation of the famous 1907 high relief gold piece. Originally conceived in December 1906, the design was presented to President Theodore Roosevelt. To bring the vision to life, mint engraver Charles Barber and Henri Weil lent their technical expertise to the production process. This modern version is struck in an ultra high relief with a mirror-like proof finish, utilizing one troy ounce of highly pure 24-karat gold. The obverse of the coin shows Lady Liberty walking forward with confidence, illuminated by the rays of a rising sun while holding a torch and an olive branch. The reverse displays a majestic bald eagle soaring through the air. Although based on the historic 1907 masterpiece, this 2009 edition features notable updates, including a narrower border to ensure a more uniform edge, and the addition of four extra stars. It also incorporates the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", an inscription that did not appear on the original 1907 release. With a total worldwide mintage of 114,427 pieces, this coin stands as a marvel of modern minting technology. It measures four millimeters in thickness, providing the depth necessary to support the dramatic, sculptural relief of the designs. The reverse inscriptions clearly display "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "TWENTY DOLLARS", cementing its place in the legacy of American coinage.
