In 2009, the United States Mint expanded its commemorative quarter program to honor the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. This particular coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition. It features a unique composition consisting of a nickel and copper outer layer bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The obverse displays the familiar left facing profile of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan. Alongside the portrait, the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST appear, with the P mint mark positioned just below the motto. The reverse side, crafted by Don Everhart, honors the rich musical heritage of the nation's capital by depicting the celebrated jazz musician Duke Ellington. He is shown seated at a grand piano, captured mid performance. This design is accompanied by the inscriptions DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, JUSTICE FOR ALL, and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside the year of release.
