Issued in 2009, this silver dollar honors the bicentennial of Louis Braille's birth. Minted in Philadelphia with a silver content of 0.7734 troy ounces, the coin serves as a tactile tribute to the creator of the writing system that opened the world of reading to the blind and visually impaired. The obverse displays a portrait of Louis Braille, flanked by his birth year, 1809, and the release year, 2009. This side also features the traditional mottos "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY". On the reverse, a child is depicted running their fingers across the pages of a Braille book. Behind the child, a bookshelf displays the word "INDEPENDENCE". Most notably, this issue is the very first United States coin to incorporate readable Braille characters, spelling out the abbreviated code for Braille, "BRL".
