In 2009, the United States Mint expanded its commemorative quarter program to honor various territories, resulting in stunning designs that capture the unique spirit of each region. This particular proof coin, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Its brilliant proof finish highlights the intricate details of a design dedicated to the Northern Mariana Islands. The obverse displays the familiar left facing profile of George Washington, a classic portrait originally created by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Alongside the central figure, the inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. The small S mint mark is also visible on this side, indicating its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, designed by Phoebe Hemphill, the coin showcases a rich assembly of local symbols. A traditional limestone latte stone stands prominently, flanked by a native canoe and two fairyterns flying overhead. A decorative mwar, or traditional flower lei, frames the lower portion of the design. The reverse inscriptions include NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS, the year 2009, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, completing a beautiful tribute to the Pacific territory.
