In 2009, the United States Mint expanded its celebratory coinage to honor the diverse territories of the nation. Among these releases is a striking twenty-five cent piece dedicated to the Northern Mariana Islands. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular coin is preserved in Gem Proof condition, displaying the sharp contrasts and mirrored surfaces characteristic of specialized proof craftsmanship. The obverse of the quarter features the classic left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president's likeness are the familiar national inscriptions, including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The distinct "S" mint mark is also visible, denoting its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, designed by Phoebe Hemphill, the coin showcases a rich tapestry of Pacific island culture and nature. The central imagery features a traditional limestone latte stone, an ancient architectural element of the region. Alongside the stone is an indigenous Carolinian canoe, representing the seafaring heritage of the islands. Two white fairy terns fly overhead, while a decorative mwar, or traditional flower lei, frames the lower portion of the design. This side is inscribed with "NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year of issue, "2009."
