2009-S U.S. Territory Puerto Rico Quarter Proof (Silver)
In 2009, the United States Mint expanded its commemorative quarter program to honor the District of Columbia and five US territories. Among these releases is a striking silver quarter dedicated to Puerto Rico, struck in a proof finish at the San Francisco Mint. This modern coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the profile of the first president are the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR, alongside the S mint mark signifying its origin in San Francisco. The reverse of the coin showcases a vivid scene representing the island's unique heritage and geography. A historic sentry box, or garita, stands on a cliffside overlooking the open water under a sky filled with clouds. This architectural icon is framed by a blooming hibiscus flower. The inscriptions on this side include PUERTO RICO and the island's Spanish nickname, Isla del Encanto, which translates to Island of Enchantment. The year 2009 and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM complete the design.
