In 2009, the United States Mint celebrated the diverse territories of the nation through its coinage, including a special tribute to Puerto Rico. This clad proof coin, struck at the San Francisco Mint, showcases a brilliant, mirror-like finish that highlights every detail of its intricate design. The reverse side of the quarter transports viewers to the historic coast of San Juan, featuring a detailed depiction of a sentry box, or garita, from the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Alongside this iconic Spanish colonial fortification is a blooming maga flower, the national flower of Puerto Rico. The inscriptions on this side celebrate the island's nickname, reading "Isla del Encanto" (Island of Enchantment), alongside the year 2009 and the traditional motto "E Pluribus Unum". This reverse artwork was designed by Joseph F. Menna. On the obverse, the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan, anchors the coin. The polished fields and frosted details of this Gem Proof specimen emphasize the classic inscriptions, including "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the denomination "Quarter Dollar". The distinct "S" mint mark is clearly visible, denoting its origin from the San Francisco Mint.
