In 2009, a special silver quarter-dollar coin was struck to celebrate the United States Virgin Islands. Minted in San Francisco, this proof-edition coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. The coin showcases a brilliant, highly polished finish characteristic of proof strikes, bringing its detailed artistry to life. The front of the coin displays the classic profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the portrait are the familiar inscriptions of liberty and trust, along with the denomination and the 'S' mint mark, which denotes its origin from the San Francisco Mint.
