In 2009, the United States Mint realized a century-old numismatic dream by striking the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. This modern gold coin, containing one troy ounce of 0.9999 fine gold, was produced at the West Point Mint on a remarkably thick four-millimeter planchet. This extra thickness allowed the metal to flow into the deep recesses of the dies, capturing an extraordinary level of detail and depth. The design traces its origins back to December 1906, when the initial concepts were presented to President Theodore Roosevelt. To bring this ambitious artistic vision to life, mint engraver Charles Barber and Henri Weil lent their expertise, preparing the necessary hubs for both standard and 27-millimeter diameter trial pieces. These early experimental strikes were crucial in testing how many blows of the coining press were needed to fully bring out the dramatic, high-relief features of the design. The obverse of this certified Mint State 69 Prooflike coin features a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty marching forward, illuminated by the rays of a rising sun while holding a torch and an olive branch. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle glides through the air. The reverse also bears the inscriptions "United States of America", "Twenty Dollars", and "In God We Trust". This issue stands as a spectacular marriage of historical artistry and modern minting technology.
