2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle MS-70 PCGS (FirstStrike®)

In 2009, the United States Mint realized a dramatic numismatic vision by striking a special twenty dollar gold coin in ultra high relief. Minted on a remarkably thick four millimeter planchet, this piece contains one troy ounce of 99.99 percent pure gold, representing a level of purity and depth that brings its sculptural elements to life in three dimensions. The obverse features Lady Liberty stepping forward against a backdrop of sunbeams, carrying a torch to light her way and an olive branch representing peace. The Roman numerals MMIX are inscribed to mark the year of production. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle glides through the air. The reverse also displays the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and IN GOD WE TRUST. This modern release traces its design concept back to December 1906, when the initial ideas were presented to President Theodore Roosevelt. For the 2009 issue, the classic imagery was updated to include fifty stars along the border, adding four stars to represent the modern fifty states. A small outer border was also introduced to frame the composition. This particular specimen has been certified in perfect Mint State 70 condition, highlighting the flawless execution of its 114,427 worldwide mintage.
