In 2010, a remarkable series of large-format silver coins commenced, celebrating the natural wonders of the United States. This substantial five-ounce silver piece, struck in 0.999 fine purity, honors Yellowstone National Park. Unlike standard circulating coinage, this issue boasts a massive diameter that allows for an incredibly detailed rendering of its wilderness-inspired artwork. The reverse of the coin features a powerful depiction of an American bison standing before the erupting waters of the Old Faithful geyser. This scene is encircled by inscriptions denoting the park name, the state of Wyoming, the year 2010, and the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of George Washington is accompanied by the legends United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and the denomination of Quarter Dollar. In a unique design choice for this series, the coin's exact weight and silver purity are incused directly onto its smooth edge. This specific specimen has been certified in an elite Mint State 69 condition with a Proof-Like designation, highlighting its sharp strike and highly reflective fields.
