In 2010, the United States Mint embarked on a remarkable numismatic journey with the America the Beautiful series. This substantial five-ounce silver coin represents one of the earliest releases in the collection, celebrating the natural wonder of Yellowstone. Struck in 0.999 fine silver with a diameter far exceeding a standard quarter, this issue carries a matte finish that highlights the subtle details of its design. The reverse side of the coin transports observers to the geothermal landscapes of Wyoming. A solitary American bison stands in the foreground, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Old Faithful geyser sending a plume of water into the air. This scene is framed by the inscriptions "YELLOWSTONE," "WYOMING," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year "2010." On the obverse, a familiar portrait of George Washington originally created by John Flanagan is presented in grand scale. Surrounding the first president are the traditional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination of "QUARTER DOLLAR." The "P" mint mark below the portrait indicates its origin from the Philadelphia Mint, which produced a limited run of 27,000 of these impressive five-ounce specimens.
