In 2011, the United States issued a remarkably large silver coin as part of the America the Beautiful series. This massive piece contains five troy ounces of 0.999 fine silver, offering a grand canvas for celebrating the country's most cherished natural landscapes. This particular release honors Olympic National Park, a vast wilderness sanctuary in Washington state that was first established in 1938. The reverse design showcases a majestic elk standing before the dramatic backdrop of Mount Olympus. Surrounding this wilderness scene are the inscriptions Olympic, Washington, 2011, and the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum. Uniquely, the coin's weight and purity are engraved directly onto its rim rather than on the face. On the obverse, the coin displays the familiar portrait of George Washington. The front is inscribed with United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and the denomination of Quarter Dollar. Despite its quarter-dollar face value, the impressive scale of this five-ounce silver issue, which had a mintage of 104,900 pieces, makes it a fascinating specimen for study.
