2011 5 oz Silver ATB Vicksburg MS-69 DPL NGC (ER)
This impressive five-ounce silver coin represents the ninth release in the celebrated America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Program. Struck from 0.999 fine silver, the substantial piece carries its weight and purity specifications engraved directly along its edge, rather than on the face. On the obverse, classic inscriptions declare UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR. The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of the U.S.S. Cairo, a Union ironclad gunboat, navigating the waters as it did during the American Civil War. Though the vessel sank during the historic conflict, it was successfully salvaged and restored in 1964. This design honors the Vicksburg National Military Park, which preserves the memory of the intense 47 day siege of a Confederate stronghold. The park also serves as the guardian of the Vicksburg National Cemetery, which marks the final resting place for 17,077 casualties of the war. The reverse is framed by the inscriptions VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the year 2011.
