Struck in one-half ounce of 0.9999 fine gold, this modern proof coin honors First Lady Eliza Johnson, who was born in Greeneville, Tennessee, on October 4, 1810. Married to President Andrew Johnson, she served as the nation's First Lady during his administration from 1865 to 1869. Produced at the United States Mint facility in West Point, New York, this issue is part of a series celebrating the spouses of American presidents. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed portrait of Eliza Johnson. Surrounding her likeness are the inscriptions "ELIZA JOHNSON", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the year of issue, 2011. It also notes her position as the 17th First Lady and the years of her husband's presidency, 1865 to 1869, along with the "W" mint mark indicating its West Point origin. The reverse design captures a rare public appearance by Eliza Johnson during her time in the White House. It depicts a joyful scene from a children's ball held in 1868, showing three young children dancing alongside a fiddler from the Marine Band.
