The obverse displays the classic design adapted from the historic double eagle by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It depicts Lady Liberty walking forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, set against a backdrop of radiating sunbeams. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a family of eagles, showing a male bird in flight returning to a nest that holds a female and their young.
