In 2011, the United States Mint at West Point produced a special variation of its premier gold coin, utilizing burnished blanks to create a matte, satin-like finish. This particular release is notable for its exceptionally low production run, with only 8,729 of these one-ounce gold pieces minted for global distribution. Strikingly different from standard bullion, the burnished surface provides a distinct backdrop for two of the most celebrated motifs in American coinage. The obverse presents a classic depiction of Lady Liberty, marching forward with a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. This design is a direct adaptation of the historic Gold Double Eagle created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, portrays a family of eagles, showing a male eagle in mid-flight carrying an olive branch to a nest containing a female eagle and her young. Inscribed with the traditional mottos "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," this fifty-dollar coin contains a full troy ounce of gold.
