Containing 0.2419 troy ounces of gold, this proof-finish coin serves as a detailed canvas reflecting a century and a half of military heritage. The front of the coin showcases the initial design of the Medal of Honor, which was first established by Congress in 1861 to serve as the supreme personal honor for members of the Navy. This side displays the dates 1861 and 2011, alongside the word LIBERTY, the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST, and the name of the decoration itself, MEDAL OF HONOR. On the back, the design features Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, drawing inspiration from the central figure found on the original Army and Navy medals. The reverse also displays the denomination of $5, the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
