This impressive five-ounce silver coin celebrates El Yunque National Forest, a lush sanctuary in Puerto Rico that holds the distinction of being the sole tropical rainforest managed by the United States Forest System. The area's conservation history is remarkably deep, having first received official protection from Spain's King Alfonso XII in 1876, before later being established as the Luquillo Forest Reserve on January 17, 1903. Struck in brilliant uncirculated condition from 0.999 fine silver, the reverse of this coin captures the vibrant ecosystem of the forest. The design showcases a native Puerto Rican parrot alongside a tiny coqui tree frog nestled among rich tropical leaves. This side of the coin bears the inscriptions El Yunque, Puerto Rico, 2012, and the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum. The obverse presents the familiar portrait of George Washington. Surrounding the presidential profile are the inscriptions United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and the face value of Quarter Dollar.
