2012-D ATB Quarter Chaco Culture National Historical Park BU
This 2012 quarter from the Denver Mint, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, belongs to the celebrated America the Beautiful series. The obverse features the classic profile of George Washington, surrounded by the traditional inscriptions of national identity and trust, including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "QUARTER DOLLAR." On the reverse, the coin transports us to the high desert of New Mexico, showcasing the remarkable architectural heritage of Chaco Canyon. The design depicts two elevated kivas, which are circular ceremonial structures, located within the Chetro Ketl Complex. This canyon served as a major cultural hub for ancient Pueblo communities from 850 to 1150 A.D. Recognizing its immense historical and archaeological importance, the area was designated as a national protected site on March 11, 1907. The reverse is inscribed with "CHACO CULTURE," "NEW MEXICO," "2012," and the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
