This 2012 quarter from the Philadelphia Mint celebrates the rugged beauty of Acadia National Park in Maine. The reverse design features the iconic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse perched on a dramatic, rocky shoreline. Established on July 8, 1916, Acadia is situated on Mount Desert Island and boasts Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak along the Atlantic Coast of the United States. The park's historic carriage roads, which visitors still enjoy today, were funded by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. On the obverse, a classic portrait of George Washington is surrounded by the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the QUARTER DOLLAR denomination. The reverse includes the inscriptions ACADIA, MAINE, 2012, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
