This brilliant uncirculated quarter from 2012 celebrates the raw power of nature preserved within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The reverse of the coin captures a dramatic moment on the east rift of Kilauea, showing an active volcanic eruption. Surrounding this fiery scene are the words "Hawai'i Volcanoes," "Hawaii," the traditional motto "E Pluribus Unum," and the year of issue, 2012. The park itself was originally created in 1916 as Hawaii National Park. It protects the dynamic environments of two massive volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. These geological giants showcase the dramatic results of more than 70 million years of volcanic activity, shifting tectonic plates, and evolutionary change.
