Struck at the West Point facility in New York, the 2012 Proof Gold American Eagle is a remarkable example of modern United States coining. This fifty-dollar legal tender piece contains one troy ounce of gold, minted with a specialized proof finish that gives the flat fields a dark, mirror-like depth and the raised details a frosted appearance. The production of this specific issue was limited, with a total global mintage of 23,630 pieces. The obverse of the coin displays a classic representation of Lady Liberty, which was originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the double eagle coin of the early twentieth century. In this design, Liberty strides forward holding an olive branch and a lit torch, symbolizing peace and enlightenment. The background features rays of sunlight rising behind her, with the word LIBERTY and the year 2012 clearly inscribed. On the reverse, a design by Miley Busiek captures a family of eagles. A male eagle is depicted in mid-flight carrying an olive branch to a nest that holds a female eagle and their young. This side of the coin features the national mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside inscriptions indicating the country of origin, the gold content, and the fifty-dollar denomination.
