Struck at the West Point Mint, this 2012 issue represents the twenty-sixth year of the United States Mint's premier silver bullion initiative, which began in 1986 and continued through 2021. Each coin contains one troy ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver and carries a face value of one dollar, backed fully by the United States government. The front of the coin features a celebrated design adapted from the historic Walking Liberty motif originally created by Adolph A. Weinman. Lady Liberty is depicted in stride, draped in the American flag, with the year 2012 inscribed below and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST positioned to her right. On the reverse, John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design evokes the Great Seal of the United States. The central eagle grasps a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak, while its talons hold an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Above the eagle, thirteen small stars are arranged in a triangular pattern to symbolize the original American colonies. The outer rim is inscribed with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the top, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ONE DOLLAR along the bottom.
